5 Tips to Avoid Wasting Your Weight Loss Dollar5 Tips to avoid wasting your weight loss dollar« click for printable PDF version

Spring is in the air, and it's the season for picnics and outdoor events. It's also that time of year where we start thinking about our how we look for those upcoming pool parties, beach days and summer vacation.

Everywhere we look, we see images of beautiful people - - all having fun and enjoying life to the fullest. Small wonder, then, that we start thinking about our own swimsuit figure this time of year...

But even though we spend over $30 billion dollars per year in this country, two-thirds of Americans are still overweight. Apparently most what we spend is wasted, and we want to help change that - starting with this short article.

Here is our list of the 5 top lies to watch for in anything asking for your weight loss dollar.

1. No diet or exercise!

There is no free ride. Just look the other way on anything that promises a miracle in weight loss without any effort on your part.

Weight loss is always a result of simple math - feed your body fewer calories or ask it to burn more. Without a calorie deficiency, there is just no way to lose weight other than extreme surgery.

After all, if there was a magic bullet to just take the pounds off, wouldn't we all be using it already?

2. Just limit your carbs!

The Atkins diet lives on in various forms - just eat as much of basically anything you want - as long as you avoid the carbs.

While you will lose some initial weight on a diet like this just because of changes in water retention, these diets are no formula for long-term success.

Even worse, this type of diet leads to greater health problems not only because of the unhealthy foods you eat, but also because of the nutrients missing from the whole grains, fruits, and veggies that you won't be eating.

3. Never diet again!

While it is possible to lose weight and keep it off, no weight loss is permanent without some lifestyle change. Yet, there are many claims of lasting weight loss without lifestyle change.

As doctors, we know from experience that losing weight is actually easier than keeping it off. So before you buy any weight loss solution with this kind of promise, have a closer look at how they plan to help you keep the weight off.

Remember, losing the weight is the easy part. Keeping it off is where 90% of all weight loss participants fail. Just ask anyone who has followed a weight loss program and see if they haven't regained all or most of it back within 6 months.

4. Miracle diet cream!

Offers like this are all complete bunk, no matter how good it may sound and what kind of before & after pictures they show you.

There just isn't a single patch or cream of any kind that you can apply topically to melt away fat.

No matter how much we may want it to be true, such things simply do not exist.

5. Fat-burning supplements!

Pick an exotic-sounding fruit, vegetable or other food and chances are someone has claimed its powers for fantastic weight loss.

The acai berry, guar gum, bitter orange, raspberry ketone, pomegranate, and more... the list of foods, medicines and chemicals with weight loss claims is longer than this article will allow.

Researchers at the University of Oregon just completed a massive study of thousands of these products with the conclusion that only green tea and some low-fat dairy may help with weight loss. Everything else showed no significant result for weight loss.

The conclusion

There is a long list of things that don't work. There's an even longer list of those willing to take your money in exchange for what may be an empty promise.

So do your homework and be careful with your wallet and your body.
